It is hard to comprehend the magnitude as well as how small of an area was effected. Now America as well as other nations want to send the well needed help to Haiti “the poorest country in the northern hemisphere”. It is hard to understand why no one has ever wanted to help Haiti before. Haiti has been a third world disaster on our doorstep for hundreds of years. Now we play humanitarian with the “our neighbors” need help. Why has the world neglected Haiti this long? It was only a matter of time for a disaster like this. In fact Haiti has suffered from over a dozen disasters in the last decade and received little or no aid. With a nation so poor and with such great numbers I can’t understand why we havn’t exploited them for some cheap labor. Well maybe this will be our big chance. Instead of having to go half way around the world with projects to concern ourselves with, we can do a little work in our own back yard. Haiti has always been in crisis. Heres a video of Haiti from before the earthquake. No farming, no sewer or trash disposal, total deforestation, no natural resources and no industry. If you don’t think thats bad enough try this one Haitian cooking video.
I hope we don’t just slap a band-aid on Haiti and ignore it like all our other disaters. Port Charlotte Florida never recovered from Hurricane Charley back on 03 when over 1,500 local businesses were affected. I’m affraid this will get the same treatment, level the damage, save who you can, and basically walk away. Spend all our resources on the next disaster or the Middle East wars.
I hate to be selfish in the wake of this disaster but this comes on the heels of the Florida freeze disaster that Florida Farmers just sufferd taking huge losses in the $10B citrus industry, the $40M Strawberry industry as well as many other fresh vegatables. You will be reminded however when you go to buy things and notice grreen beans are DOUBLE as well as other things. Even the tropical fish industry will be affected as many come from fish farms in Florida who were equally impacted. This could not have come at a worse time.
